Rutgers Focus Quotes Millerand: Women labor leaders from two sides of the Atlantic find commonalities

“It is astonishing how similar the labor movements here and in the U.K. are – they’re more like us than they are like the rest of Europe,” said Lucye Millerand, president of the Union of Rutgers Administrators (URA). “Their model of union organizing shop by shop is very similar to ours, and the privatization of what was once the public sector is a huge issue for them, as it is here.”

Millerand was participating in a program that recently brought 10 union leaders from across the Atlantic to the Rutgers campus for meetings with 10 New Jersey counterparts. The exchange, which organizers believe is the first of its kind in the nation, represents an ongoing partnership among Queen Mary, University of London; the New Jersey State AFL-CIO; and the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations.
