April 11: Nike Just Pay It! Honduran Workers to speak about Nike Abuses
Date: Sunday, April 11, 2010
Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Van Dyke Hall 211 on college ave
Description. On Sunday April 11th, Rutgers United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) will be bringing two workers from Honduras to tell their story about the tragedies caused by Nike to the people of Honduras because of Nike's human rights violations.
On January 2009, Nike closed down two factories, Vision Tex and Huggers, in honduras without warning, leaving almost 2000 workers off the job. Many of these workers are single mothers struggling to survive. As legally obligated by the government of Honduras, Nike owed these workers over $2.5 million in severance pay.
It is now April 2010 and Nike has still not paid its workers even a dime. Not only that, new reports by the Workers Rights Consortium (that Rutgers belongs to) state that the factories had failed to provide any healthcare to its employees even though the workers themselves paid for it every month. This resulted in deaths in each factory.
We need you all to come out and hear their tragic stories and demand that Rutgers cut its contract with Nike if Nike won't pay their workers. President McCormick Needs to understand the immediate need for Rutgers to Act.
Nike makes in revenue in an hour what they owe these workers.
