Union Leadership Academy Fall Courses

The Union Leadership Academy (ULA) is an education-based training program targeted toward union officials, members, and anyone else who may be interested in learning from the course material. The purpose of the program is to enhance the knowledge of our students and create more effective ways to represent the members and their interests/concerns. Each course is designed in a way so that the students will become a conscious competent of the material; therefore, they will be able to present what they have learned to their local, ultimately teaching their members and sharing beneficial information, which they have gained through classes.

(2) 2nd Term: November 1-Deccember 17
*No classes Thanksgiving week November 22-26

(1) Social Media for Union Activists

This course provides a hands-on experience on how to use social media, such as Facebook and Twitter to communicate with members, mobilize members, and organize new members. This course is for both beginners and intermediate level users to facilitate more opportunities for planning and communicating.

(2) Union Building
An introduction to innovative approaches, tools, and techniques to help build a stronger and more effective union.

(1) Labor History
Understand and explore the 19th and 20th century working people and the organizations they created. This course discusses ways in which labor’s history can be preserved and promoted.

(2) Labor Law
An introduction of the National Labor Relations Act and of the NLRB. The overview of laws in this course is designed to give you the tools necessary to defend and protect the rights of your members.

(1) Labor and Politics

Learn how to identify issues to create an effective political agenda. Explore how the political and bill-making process works, how coalitions can be built around issues, and how to lobby effectively.

(2) Labor History

Understand and explore the 19th and 20th century working people and the organizations they created. This course discusses ways in which labor’s history can be preserved and promoted.

(2) Contract Enforcement and Interpretation
This course will review and interpret the latest changes in the labor relation’s law in both the public and private sectors. Key court decisions, along with NLRB rulings will be analyzed and discussed as they apply to the workplace.

Live On-line Courses (6 Mondays, 6:00-8:46pm)
(1) Rights to Family and Medical Leave
This course will instruct union activists on the most effective methods for filing complaints with the government agencies and assisting members with resolving issues with the FMLA, and other statutes.

(2) Union Stewards Training
This course is designed to equip new union stewards with the necessary tools, skills, and knowledge to perform their duties.

Registration Fee: $80 per person per course (URA-AFT covers registration fees for members).
